We bought a car from SJ Rayner in December, via a recommendation for the business from a well known motoring website (Pistonheads) and a previous customer.

Sadly, second hand car sales do not always have the best of reputations, which belies the fact that there are many decent, reputable and conscientious businesses out there.

Like many people, buying a car, new or second hand is one of the biggest life purchases we make, and buying a second hand car brings with it the usual anxiety about whether it is a good car, what will happen if there is a problem, am I doing the right thing and is my money safe?

Our experience of buying with SJ Rayner, and Matt as our sales manager / point of contact was absolutely perfect.

The car was as described and was a very good example. The price was very fair and Matt was straightforward, decent to deal with and acted with integrity and honesty throughout the transaction.

Everything Matt and SJ Rayner said they would do, they did, and they couldn’t have been more welcoming and accommodating,
offering a test drive to try the car out, at our leisure and a second test drive a few days later to see if the car would get in our drive (funny slope angle and a low car).

No pressure tactics, no hard selling and none of the scare stories you hear about with car sales in general.

We would absolutely use these guys again and we couldn’t be happier with the car we bought from them. Highly recommend them if you are in the market for a car.

Very good experience rate S J Rayner cars 5 star. Full Story: I had to travel 180 miles to view the car, I was very reluctant to travel that far just to see a car in unknown condition. Spoke to Simon and he gave me a full description of the car and convinced me it was worth the trip. When I got there the care was as described. Made a deal with Steve subject so some small jobs to be done on the car. (Small scratches and service etc) Agreed to collect the following Friday. Steve kept me informed as the tasks were being done and sent me the BMW service review video. When collecting the car it was presented perfectly and the hand over process was made easy and efficient. All jobs completed as discussed and the car was even topped up the petrol. (BMW would charge you for that even on a new car)

What a great experience.

After months of searching for a good learner car we found SJ Rayner. Not only did they prepare and service the car ahead of time but also delivered it for free on our chosen day a couple weeks later on my wife’s Birthday.

We are now looking for a second car from them now she’s passed her test and our kids want to learn in the same car.

Purchased a BMW i3 early this year, I believe it to be around April 2023. I was unfortunate to have issues with my vehicle but I have to say that S J Rayner went above and beyond to try help me. They gave me the vehicle earlier than they wanted to as they knew I couldn’t get to work. They were very professional and the owner is an absolute gentleman. He tried his best to work with me but unfortunately due to the distance we couldn’t make it work. They returned the money to the finance company, returned my deposit and cancelled everything. It was the easiest and quickest rewind I’ve known. They are clearly a very reputable and decent dealership. Whilst I doubt they’d let me buy another car, I would happily use them in future. In fact, I look back now and wish I gave them time to fix it. I miss the BMW i3 – a poor decision rewinding the finance on it. Regretted it shortly afterwards. If you’re wondering whether to use this garage, I assure you they’re fantastic. You’re in safe hands.

I could not fault the staff at S J Rayner at all, everyone was very welcoming and understanding and helpful of what vehicle we were looking for. Unfortunately car developed a major transmission fault after a few days to SJ Rayners credit they took car back and I hasten to add without any questions and gave me a full refund

Not all purchases go to plan but that doesnt affect the service received from S J Rayner and especially Steve.
I bought a car from S J Rayner which developed a fault, Steve took the car back and sent it to a local garage and then a main dealer garage, neither garage could fix the issue we had so it needed more investigation.
Steve called me as soon as I reported the fault to his colleague and OFFERED me two otions, either they send the car for further diagnostics and work or a refund on my purchase with no issues whatsoever.
By this time my wife had lost faith in the car so we opted for a refund, the car was returned and refunded within a couple of hours and they even gave me a lift home.
The thing to note here is Steve OFFERED me the refund with no raised voices, no arguments and no issues whatsoever.
Its a shame Steve didnt have another suitable car for us as I would have no issues buying anther car from him.
Buy with confidence , they are genuine people who will help you if you need it.

I traded in my newer car to these guys to release some cash out of it, the price they offered me was extremely reasonable compared to their local and national competitors, so I was happy and was glad to sell the car to a local, honest, well-established and friendly company.

I bought a 2012 Nissan Navara Outlaw for a very reasonable price in November ’17. They left me to get on with looking at the truck, test drive etc no pressure at all.
I said there was a couple of bits to fix up (which they did that week). A day or two after collecting the truck I noticed one of the bits was still faulty which they offered to buy the parts and fix themselves or buy the parts for me to fix it etc.

i recently purchased my new pride and joy from the gentlemen at SJ Rayner and i wanted to thank them and commend then for what is the highest level of service i have come across in a long time.

I viewed the car a couple of weeks before purchasing on the 21st March and after been greeted was handed the keys to the car and left to look around. I then asked to test drive the car and after some directions and a copy of my license i was off.

i then viewed the car a second time on the 29th with my partner. We were greeted and spoke with a sales man called Steve who was polite and not pushy in any way, meaning that the experience was of the highest level. I then agreed to purchase the car from them.

I was then told there was is a turn around of 7 days for collection due to the car having to be checked, MOT’d and serviced. After explaining to Steve that i wanted the car sooner he managed to get the car prepared for the following Monday.

After a couple of weeks i noticed a little wear on the fan belt so i called and spoke with Simon who again was a great guy to speak with. He was not happy that i was not 100% they had the car from me and provided me with a car to use in the mean time at no cost.

The belts were replaced and the car returned good as new in 1 working day.

i cant recommend these guys highly enough.

i would be more than happy to deal with them again.

We have bought many cars from dealers over the years and we count this experience amongst the best ! From viewing the car with Matt to the hand over with Stephen including meeting ‘the boss’ your level of customer service is excellent with a lovely friendly attitude .
We really appreciated coffee on the bench in the sun whilst waiting for our test drive too.

WAIT! A few weeks have passed after purchase, had a hell of a noise from the air-con fan! Took the vehicle back for a check-up and the problem was solved. It turns out that a parking ticket from the machine which was left on the dash had slipped down and causing the noise. Anyway, not only was that sorted straightway but a few minor little issues were also sorted out thanks to Julian. Thanks again to all at S J Rayners!
